The Push-Up Challenge and a Generational Debate

Two weekends ago, I did a push-up face-off with a millennial colleague of mine who implied I was getting old. “How the hell did I get there?” I wondered.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed Generation Z and Millennials tout their superiority over the generations before them. This happened right in the middle of a meeting, and it got me thinking. Upon quick reflection on their assertion, I decided to ask those who fell within that age bracket on my team if they believed they had better intellectual ability, skills and talents, wealth and socioeconomic status, leadership ability and influence, moral or ethical values, cultural and social contributions, personal traits and characteristics, and – the one that got me on the floor doing push-ups – physical strength or athleticism.

Right after the push-up challenge with this 27-year-old gentleman, I’ll tell you how this panned out. I mentioned that I would be writing an article after doing a bit of research, and this would aim to prove that Gen Zs are not as valuable as they posit to be. A Gen Z lady on my team laughed out loud and said, “Mr. Fab, you will be dragged.” By the way, for non-Gen Zs who struggle with terminologies made popular by this age group, “dragging” is an increasingly common cyberbullying trend where people are publicly humiliated on social media for expressing harmless thoughts and opinions. It means you’d be insulted online by mostly faceless individuals who derive pleasure from inflicting pain through their words on anyone who dares challenge their assertions.

However, my research has been concluded, and this is the very article I said I’d write. So, let’s dwell on the facts, shall we?

The Strengths of Generation X

I missed the millennial age grouping by 2 years, but when I hear some describe the attributes of Generation Z, I sometimes say to myself, “Oh my. They’re describing me.” Generation Z largely goes against the grain and thinks outside the proverbial box – that was me, all of my life, but we won’t be going there today.

While Generation X, born roughly between 1965 and 1980, may not have grown up in the digital age like Generation Z and Millennials, they possess unique qualities and experiences that offer several advantages in the workplace.

Experience

Generation X typically has more years of experience in the workforce compared to Gen Z and Millennials. They have weathered economic downturns, technological advancements, and shifts in the business landscape, gaining valuable insights and expertise along the way. This experience equips them with a depth of knowledge and a seasoned perspective that can be invaluable in decision-making and problem-solving.

Work Ethic

Generation X is often characterized by its strong work ethic and independence. Having entered the workforce during a time of economic prosperity, they are known for their resilience, resourcefulness, and willingness to put in the hard work to achieve their goals. Their dedication and commitment to their careers can contribute to productivity and stability within organizations.

Financial Stability

Many members of Generation X are in positions of financial stability, having established their careers and advanced into leadership roles. This financial stability can provide a sense of security and confidence, allowing them to make strategic decisions without the same financial pressures faced by younger generations.

Adaptability

While Generation X may not have grown up with technology as pervasive as Gen Z and Millennials, they have demonstrated adaptability in integrating new technologies into their work processes. They have embraced digital tools and platforms as they have become more prevalent in the workplace, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt to changing technologies and trends.

Leadership Skills

Generation X is now entering leadership positions within organizations, bringing with them a wealth of leadership experience and skills. They are effective communicators, problem-solvers, and mentors who can provide guidance and support to younger generations in the workforce. Their leadership abilities are valuable assets in driving organizational success and fostering a positive work culture.

Balanced Approach

Generation X is often characterized as a generation that seeks a balance between work and personal life. They prioritize work-life balance and value flexibility in their careers. This perspective can contribute to a more harmonious work environment and help promote employee well-being and satisfaction.

Critical Thinking

Generation X grew up in an era before the widespread use of the internet and social media. As a result, they tend to be more discerning consumers of information and skilled critical thinkers. They are adept at evaluating information, synthesizing complex ideas, and making informed decisions, which are valuable skills in today’s information-rich world.

Overall, while Generation X may not receive as much attention as Gen Z and Millennials, they bring a wealth of experience, skills, and perspectives to the table that make them valuable assets in the workplace. By leveraging their expertise, work ethic, adaptability, and leadership abilities, organizations can benefit from the unique contributions of Generation X employees.

The Advantages of Generation Z and Millennials

Each generation brings unique qualities and perspectives to the workforce, contributing to the overall success of businesses in different ways. While Generation X has its strengths and expertise, both Generation Z (born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s) and Millennials (born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s) offer distinct advantages that may make them particularly valuable to businesses in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.

Digital Natives

Gen Zs and Millennials grew up in the digital age, surrounded by technology from an early age. They are adept at using digital tools and platforms, making them valuable assets for businesses looking to innovate and adapt to technological advancements.

Tech-Savvy

With their fluency in technology, Gen Zs and Millennials can quickly grasp new software applications and digital trends. They bring fresh perspectives on leveraging technology to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences.

Innovative Thinking

Gen Zs and Millennials are known for their creativity and innovation. They are not afraid to challenge the status quo, question traditional methods, and propose innovative solutions to complex problems. This mindset fosters a culture of innovation within organizations, driving continuous improvement and growth.

Diverse Perspectives

Gen Zs and Millennials grew up in increasingly diverse and interconnected societies. They value diversity and inclusion, and bring unique perspectives shaped by their experiences with globalization, multiculturalism, and social activism. Their diverse viewpoints enrich discussions, foster creativity, and drive innovation within teams.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Many Gen Zs and Millennials exhibit an entrepreneurial mindset, characterized by ambition, adaptability, and a willingness to take calculated risks. They are proactive, self-starters who are eager to learn and grow professionally. This entrepreneurial spirit can fuel innovation and drive business growth, particularly in dynamic and competitive industries.

Socially Conscious

Gen Zs and Millennials are socially conscious and prioritize purpose-driven work. They seek meaning and fulfillment in their careers, gravitating towards organizations that align with their values and contribute positively to society. Businesses that prioritize social responsibility and sustainability can attract and retain top talent from these generations.

Adaptability

Gen Zs and Millennials are adaptable and resilient in the face of change. They have witnessed economic upheavals, technological disruptions, and societal shifts, which have equipped them with the skills to navigate uncertainty and thrive in dynamic environments. Their ability to adapt quickly to new challenges is invaluable to businesses facing rapid transformation.

Collaborative Skills

Gen Zs and Millennials value collaboration and teamwork. They are accustomed to working in diverse teams, leveraging collective strengths, and fostering inclusive work environments. Their collaborative skills enhance productivity, foster creativity, and promote a culture of teamwork within organizations.

Unfinished Furniture can greatly benefit from harnessing the unique strengths of both Generation X and the younger generations. By leveraging the experience and critical thinking of Gen X, while tapping into the digital fluency, innovative mindset, and collaborative spirit of Gen Zs and Millennials, furniture makers can create a dynamic and adaptable workforce that can navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the furniture industry.

Bridging the Generational Gap

My research may have shown, for instance, that Gen Zs are more entrepreneurial, but I still posit that Gen Xs started this ripple that has turned into a wave. I can, however, conclude that whatever amazing qualities the Gen Zs possess, they should be willing to submit to the guidance and leadership borne out of the experience that the Gen Xs bring. A refined Millennial or Gen Z could be even more lethal than one in its raw state.

I may not be “dragged” after all, and yes, I did 50 push-ups straight on that fateful day, and my 27-year-old colleague who thought he was fitter didn’t make it to 10. Do you need proof? Reach out.

Each generation has its unique strengths, and by acknowledging and embracing these differences, furniture makers can create a harmonious and highly effective workforce. The key is to foster an environment of mutual respect, open-mindedness, and collaborative learning, where the wisdom and experience of Generation X can be seamlessly integrated with the innovative spirit and digital fluency of the younger generations.

Conclusion: Embracing the Power of Generational Diversity

The furniture industry, like many others, is facing a rapidly evolving landscape, driven by technological advancements, changing consumer preferences, and shifting market dynamics. In this context, the diverse strengths and perspectives offered by different generations can be a powerful asset for furniture makers seeking to stay ahead of the curve.

By embracing the experience and critical thinking of Generation X, the digital fluency and entrepreneurial spirit of Generation Z and Millennials, and cultivating a culture of collaboration and mutual learning, furniture makers can unlock a wealth of innovative solutions, enhance traditional techniques, and deliver exceptional products and services to their customers.

The future of the furniture industry lies in the harmonious integration of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology, a synthesis that can be achieved by leveraging the unique contributions of all generations in the workforce. As we move forward, let us celebrate the diversity of talent and perspectives that each generation brings to the table, and work together to shape the furniture industry of tomorrow.
