You see, I didn’t always envision myself as a furniture maker. In fact, my path to this fulfilling career was a winding one. For years, I worked as an arborist, nurturing and preserving the very trees that would eventually become the centerpiece of my creations. It was during this time that I developed a profound respect for the intricate stories each tree has to tell.
One day, I decided to take the leap and fully commit to my woodworking business, PK Brown Woodworking. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I knew deep down that this was my true calling. I left the security of the tech industry, where I had found myself feeling unfulfilled, and dove headfirst into the world of sustainable furniture design.
Embracing the Power of Clean Energy
As I embarked on this new chapter, I knew that sustainability would be at the core of everything I do. My workshop and home have become a beacon of clean energy, thanks to a meticulously designed photovoltaic system of solar panels that adorn my roof. This system generates nearly 90% of the electricity needed to power my craft-making and home, dramatically reducing my carbon footprint.
But I didn’t stop there. I’ve also incorporated a solar thermal system, including Evacuated Tube Solar Collectors from Sun Maxx Solar and a split duct system, to provide most of the hot water used in my home. These clean energy solutions have not only slashed my oil consumption but have also proved to be incredibly cost-effective.
“I decided to make the switch because I don’t have a pension, and my wife doesn’t have a pension,” I explain. “We’re trying to reduce our expenses as much as possible so that when we retire, we don’t have hundreds of dollars in utility expenses each month. You hear the horror stories of what some folks are dealing with. Our utility bill last year was about $1,000 for the whole year!”
Sourcing Sustainable Timber
Of course, sustainability extends far beyond my energy usage. When it comes to the materials I use, I’m just as meticulous. I source all my wood locally, carefully selecting each piece to ensure it not only reflects the tree’s unique properties but also minimizes environmental impact.
“New York State wood has to be sustainably managed, as compared to wood grown outside the US,” I explain. “There are forests around here that have been around for hundreds of years; they’ve been harvested, but harvested sustainably. I actually see logging trucks pass by my house going to the mill I buy from. In 8-10 weeks, I might purchase that wood for my work.”
By supporting local, sustainably-managed forests, I’m not only reducing my carbon footprint but also ensuring the long-term health of our natural resources. It’s a win-win for both the environment and the quality of my creations.
Rethinking the Packaging Conundrum
But my commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at the workshop door. I’ve also rethought the way I package and ship my products, always seeking ways to minimize waste and environmental impact.
“There are so many little steps you can take to be sustainable, especially with your packaging,” I share. “You don’t need to use peanuts. I haven’t had a complaint with the way I ship stuff, and I’ve actually shipped things to different countries. I’ll get a local newspaper and wrap it up in that, so they get to see a newspaper from here. Little stuff like that.”
I also work with EcoEnclose, a provider of eco-conscious cardboard wrapping for shipping my more fragile items over longer distances. These wrappings can be easily recycled, furthering my holistic approach to sustainability.

Heirlooms. Starting with the idea that my works could last generations, it feels even nicer to save the trees and build with rescued and reused hardwoods.”
